An Ode To Overstretching – The Old Gypsy Ways of Madame La Jaune$25.00 AUD
This hilarious children’s book brings some well needed lightness to the serious issue of overstretching that is rife in the dance and gymnastics industries. It is a perfect book to have in your waiting area, to promote discussion on this important topic.
The story of Madame La Jaune was spawned from a conversation between Lisa Howell and her dad, Mike, when Lisa asked him if he could draw up some cartoons of the crazy overstretched positions that dancers are seen in these days all over social media. She wanted to highlight the potential danger to the body that was caused by sitting in positions like these, whilst still appealing to everybody’s sense of humour. From there, the story took a life of its own. The pictures were an absolute success and members of the dance world fell in love with the simple but clear message that was embodied in Madame La Jaune.
Mike then took matters into his own hands and began exploring the back story to explain his often mused upon question “Why do good people sometimes teach badly?”
6 months later and this is the result, a story of dance, comedy and science. This book will give you an insight into the other side of Overstretching and the seemingly crazy ways of some teachers. Follow Madame La Jaune and understand her point of view, as well as where we go to from here!

Many dance teachers are concerned at the safety of their students who are working into the extreme positions require by some current choreography. They want to keep their students safe, yet do not want to hold their dancers back from suceeding in this ever competative world. While some young dancers struggle with their range constantly, others have excessive natural range, and will often perform “tricks” that make most adults squirm. How do you train this extreme mobility safely?
During this two day flexibility Intensive teacher training course you will learn answers to the following questions, and more:
- What may makes one person tighter than the other?
- Why can one dancer do the splits without stretching while others can’t, even when they try so hard?
- Why do students sometimes feel even less flexible when they are stretching?
- How do I help student get their leg higher in second when it just feels like it’s stuck in the socket?
- How do I deal with a class full of students with different levels of flexibility?
- How do I deal with students who suddenly lose flexibility when they go through a growth spurt?
- What is neural tension, and how can I work safely with students with tight nerves?
- In students who have amazing range, how do I ensure they stay safe?
- How do you work into deep back extensions without risk of stress fractures or spondylolisthesis?
