トウシューズを履き始める前には足の成長期が終わったかどうかをチェックするために、レントゲン写真を撮った方が良いと言う人がいます。誰もが全員レントゲン写真を撮ったほうが良いとは思いません。それよりも、成長過程の骨に過度な摩擦を避ける為に、トウシューズを履き始める前に足が適切な強さに達しているかどうかが大事なのです。トウシューズを履く前に足の使い方を熟知していることが、トウシューズを履いた時に足のコントロールができるのです。

トウシューズを履くには少なくとも11歳から12歳になっているべきというのが、医療関係者の中では一般的な意見です。子供の頃には柔らかかった足の骨の成長板も12歳では硬くなり始めるので(成長の速度にもよる)、成長の妨げになることが少なく、足への長期的にみたダメージのリスクも少ないです。しかし、12歳になれば誰でもトウシューズを履けるわけではありません!成長板は16歳から18歳までは完全に閉じて落ち着くわけではありませんので、年齢というのはトウシューズを履く前に考慮しなければいけないことのたった一つにすぎません。

もしも真剣にプロのバレエダンサーを目指しているのであれば、骨が完全に融合する16歳から18歳の年齢まで待っていては遅すぎます。骨の成長が早く進み、トウシューズを数年早く履く事ができた他のダンサーに追いつくことができません。様々な論文でより現実的なガイドラインが発表されていますが、それによると骨はが75%融合する時まではトウシューズを履くのを待ちます。年齢でいうと11歳〜12歳です。しかし残念なことに、この骨の融合は個人によって差が大きくあります。11歳でもトウシューズを履くに耐えうる骨の成長が完成している子供もいれば、13歳でも骨構造が未発達でしばらく待つ必要がある子供もいます。
