The Intensive Workshops allow you to focus and grow in each specific area of dance technique. Each one is delivered as a one or two day workshop, that can be taken in your area of interest. The classes typically run from 9am to 5pm, or 9am - 4pm for the two day workshops, which allows each area to be explored in greater detail and provides age appropriate progressions, modifications for injury & personal experience.

Core Stability Intensive

A New Approach to Core Stability

For Dance Teachers and Health Professionals

By far one of the major problem areas that we see as therapists working with dancers, athletes, office workers and weekend warriors alike is in the the area of “Core Stability".

Many dancers, athletes and other individuals are performing “core” exercises that focus too much on control or restricting movement by bracing. Often the very exercises that individuals are using to try and better themselves are actually part of the problem. Over recruitment of muscles can cause just as many, if not more issues, than weakness in muscles, and this often happens when individuals have been formally taught how to move. In addition, many people perform their stability exercises lying on their back, which does not prepare them for the demands of sitting, standing and dancing!

What is needed is a radical rethink of what ‘core stability’ actually is, and a new approach to training stability in dancers which is built up over the years. When addressing core stability when there is an issue with mobility or pain in older dancers, we need to make a careful assessment of each individuals movement strategies, isolate their specific weaknesses and a develop a carefully considered retraining program to retrain optimal stability.

This full day intensive teacher training course builds on the knowledge gained in Level 1 and looks at developing strategies for facilitating true core stability in all ages and abilities. We include lots of practical tips and ways of helping every dancer, from your tiny tots to your Silver Swans!

So what is 'Core Stability"?

How we approach the training of the core has evolved drastically over the last 10 years. Recent focuses include how to incorporate breath into our training of the core to subtly activate muscles like the pelvic floor and transverse abdominus in an more effective way.

The new approach looks less at conscious control, and more at utilising the body’s natural ability to stabilise itself. This can be achieved through carefully selected and graded exercises can be done to reestablish subconscious control whilst also raising kinaesthetic awareness.

This full day intensive teacher training course builds on the knowledge gained in Level 1 and looks at developing strategies for facilitating true core stability in all ages and abilities. We include lots of practical tips and ways of helping every dancer, from your tiny tots to your Silver Swans!

Note: Please do not worry if you struggle with your own stability or have any injuries!

The course is broken down into stages with each stage comprised of different exercise assessments, allowing the dancer and teacher to gauge at which level they currently stand. Each stage becomes incrementally harder to involve more elements and dynamic movement of the spine.

What you will gain from this course:

  • An understanding of the interconnected structures and functional anatomy that make up the body’s core
  • An understanding of how the fascial lines affect core stability
  • An understanding of the importance of the breath and it's relationship to the core
  • Knowledge of the deepest stabilising muscles of the spine, and how to tell if they are effectively working
  • The confidence to accurately assess the strengths and weaknesses in your students’ core stability in all dimensions
  • Insight into the variety common core weaknesses and prescriptive exercises to help strengthen these instabilities
  • A wide range of exercises that target the larger and smaller muscles that help to stabilise the pelvis, spine and limbs
  • A look into recent back pain research and simple strategies for relieving common back pain
  • Explanations for dance teachers on how to easily involve these exercises into students’ warm-up and strengthening routines
  • A handbook and access to a wide range of video material to refresh your knowledge

The Anatomy of Core Stability

Core Stability Grading

In the early part of the course we look at the natural development of spontaneous core stabilituy: Why some people developp it, and why others don't. We then look at specific isolation of the deepest layers of stabilising muscles, which is essential in both hypermobile individuals and those that have had significant episodes of abdominal or back pain.

Once correct firing of the inner unit has been established, we work through a grading system that assesses and develops stability in all directions. Using this form as a screening and training tool has dramatically increased the core control of our clients and gives them concrete goals of what they need to achieve next.

The exercises are split into different positions, and progress through five grades of difficulty. Often, an athlete will be much more stable in one direction that the others, due to their current training program. The grades are progressed with added complexity and require fine co-ordination rather than adding load to develop strength.
